Holiday Savings

Discuss holiday gift giving with your immediate and extended family. Set a limit for gift giving and do not deviate from this limit. Holiday enjoyment comes more from the fellowship of your family and friends than from any gifts that are exchanged.

Consider thoughtful homemade gifts such as photo albums, baked goods or anything else you can make. Such gifts are often more personal and unique than anything you could buy. The recipient will appreciate the effort you have put into the gift.

Try writing all the names of extended family members on small pieces of paper and placing them (folded) into a basket. Allow each person to select one name. The family then agrees to buy a gift only for the person that he or she has selected. Keeping the selections a secret adds to the fun.

Put aside a set amount for the holidays each week. When you see a gift on sale, buy it with the cash from your holiday savings.
